2. Ask Questions ..Have Opinions - If you don't ask, you are perceived to not know the material or maybe you simply don't care.
3. Know why you are good at what you do - People who articulate, with high esteem, why they are good at what they do are statistically likely to actually be that good. Modest ways to express this are through awards, recognition and testimonials of clients, managers and peers.
4. Know who will be on the call - The hiring manager? One of your peers? How technical with the interview be? It’s a different approach for one versus many.
5. Know something about the job – What is the technology footprint? What do they leverage? What will be the required skills? What project(s) you will be working? What will you need to accomplish in the first 30-60-90 days?
6. Know your resume - Know dates, titles, what you did and why you left. Transition statements are critical, especially for full-time jobs.
7. Be able to articulate your motivation to accept the job - What are the three keys benefits of a role that will motivate you to accept? Interviewers want an opportunity to attract you to the role.
8. Research social and business networks - See who you may know who could coach you or even hinder your efforts. Be proactive, ask around.
9. Logistics - Know the time of the call. Confirm who is making the call and to what number is being used. Allow 25% more time than allocated in case you get on a roll, or the interviewer is delayed.
10. ASK for the next step! Unless it’s a complete mismatch, ask enthusiastically for the next step. In consulting, it’s often asking for the contract. As a full-timer, it's usually the face-face.
Recruiting - What we see...
Activity is up for most candidates. Six months ago people had one active job possibility and a few others in the pipeline (not a lot of human interaction). Today they have multiple, active possibilities. Remember to remind your prospective employers (politely) that the sense of urgency is a little different than in 2010. Most customers trend 6-9 months BEHIND in their hiring behaviors.
